Sun, sand, and salty wind may be far in the distance, but that doesn't mean your hair has to know that. We can all agree that one of the best things about summer is coming home from the beach with sun-kissed skin coupled with carefree, tousled hair. With less travel this summer, you can achieve the look that only laying out at the beach all day can give you by faking it 'til you make it. At home. With literally 2 or more ingredients.
If you can naturally achieve those just-napped-on-a-beach tousled waves by falling asleep face-first on top of a layer of sand, then there is absolutely no reason why you need to spend top dollar on styling products when the look you're going for is lived in, perfectly imperfect waves. The secret to getting the ultimate "what, this ol' thing?" beachy look is simple. Use the actual beach on your hair. We're talking about salt sprays.
Salt sprays are exactly what they sound like - sprays that are formulated with your classic sodium chloride. So for beachy hair without going to the beach, mix:
- 2 tablespoons of salt
- 1 cup of boiling water
You can also add a few drops of an essential oil of your choice and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil or olive oil for softer locks. Stir until dissolved and pour into a spray bottle once cooled. Shake and spritz over damp hair.
Making your own texturizing sea salt spray is another way you can minimize your plastic consumption and waste. Millions of bottles of plastic waste are created from hair products annually and while plastic bottles can sometimes be recycled (although only 9% of plastic ever created has been recycled), the plastic straw and spritzing top are almost always headed to the landfill. This DIY spray is a great way to up-cycle an old bottle and will save you heaps of dollars in the long run.
Amp up your hair's texture and enjoy those summer-time salty waves all year long!
